Significant Lessons Learned
I have learned several significant career lessons throughout my completion of the Healthcare Management Program at WGU.
One significant lesson that has impacted me is that laws and organizational policies cannot ensure ethical behavior. This lesson is based on the leadership concept of personal ethical standards. Policies and behaviors directed towards employees and clients can be unethical while still being legal. Since laws/policies cannot guarantee ethical behavior, and since laws/policies are created by people, it is up to people themselves to uphold ethical standards. A person's ethical views are the effects of his personal principles and beliefs. To be an ethical leader in the healthcare industry a person must demonstrate ethical behavior towards patients, clients, fellow employees, etc. To do this he must value human life and wellness through development of his personal beliefs and principles.
Another significant lesson I have learned is the importance of technology on the healthcare industry. This lesson is based on the leadership concept of maintaining a competitive advantage through investment in new technologies. The development of Electronic Health Record systems has and is continuing revolution the industry. Patient care and business profitability has been drastically improved by the many features offered by modern EHR systems such as those offered by Cerner and Meditech. Some of these features include encryption for secure and rapid transmission of PHI; Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS) which help physicians to make the best decisions for patient care; and Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) features which protect against duplicated or otherwise unnecessary testing. Accompanying this technological progress is the necessity of diligent effort by organizations to ensure interoperability, compatibility, and security of the various devices and applications.
A third lesson that has impacted me throughout my program is that managers/leaders have great influence on their subordinates. This lesson is based on leadership theories like the Transformational and Charismatic theories of leadership. Having authority over others and managing them to meet basic expectations and metrics is only part of being an effective and influential leader. Some aspects of leader's influence cannot be measured in quantifiable statistics, but that doesn't mean a manager should ignore these aspects. Instead a manager should seek direct and indirect feedback from his subordinates to guide his behavior. By being assertive and involved a manager can improve retention and employee attitude. He can even have a profound positive impact on the growth and wellness of his subordinates.
